Weighing up the Scales – Composite Component Benefits

The market appetite for composite component creation and design is growing exponentially and with good reason. To understand more, let’s take a closer look at the Why, Who, and How of what’s driving and delivering to this demand.

Why?

As recognition grows towards fully understanding the benefits of composite components, so does demand. The ability to manufacture a composite component that is lighter, stronger, and more efficient than their traditional counterparts lead the charge. In broad terms, composite components are around 80% lighter and considerably stronger by significant factors of magnitude than their traditionally manufactured components. The ability to manufacture a single component from what may have historically been a collection of sub-assembled parts can introduce additional design and operational elegance, cost savings, increased reliability, less assembly time, together with faster production times.

It’s difficult to rationalise any reason to continue using legacy materials, manufacture, and assembly methods when composite components offer:

  • Reduced weight
  • Design elegance
  • Increased strength
  • Faster production
  • Quicker assembly time
  • Cost effectiveness

Who?

Purely and simply, the foundation for all composite component manufacturing is made first by the selection of a recognised leader in this field with whom to work in pattern and mould creation. Freeform Technology are one such visionary leader in this respect. An expert and experienced team who are able to undertake projects that may be completely new or alternatively, working with established methodologies and existing production manufacture towards developing and leading the migration path, transitioning from legacy to composite.

How?

First step is by the creation or submission of either drawings, 2D design, 3D design or occasionally, importation of other file types. In cases where there may only be just a vision, we work closely with our customer in understanding the requirement and converting it into a tangible reality.

Our extensively equipped workshop houses a complete and wide range of machining tools, operated by a highly skilled and experienced team who create the tooling, patterns and moulds as necessary. We manufacture composite patterns predominantly, but not exclusively, from the following substrates:

  • Epoxy
  • High density polyurethane
  • Steels
  • Aluminium
